Discover the southside bay trail

Three E-bikes parked next to Beaumaris Bay fossil site beach.

Overview

Most people that visit Melbourne go to Brighton and visit the Mornington Peninsula. But there is so much more to discover in between. This tour will take you past Melbourne's unspoiled beaches and hidden gems. Not only the stops are amazing, but so are the views along the way.

  • No. of participants: 4 - 10
  • 36 Kilometers return - 5 Hours
  • Riders must be at least 12 years old & ~150 cm tall (and be accompanied by an adult). Kids under 12 can ride as a passenger with an adult as our e-bikes are 2-person bikes (max. weight 150kg). For this tour we don't allow 2 adults per bike as this will reduce the durability of the battery.
  • Child seats available for children 9 months - 4 years (<22 kg) at an additional fee of $20.

Highlights

  • The first stop is Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary. You will have time to explore the rockpools and look for seabirds and Melbourne's famous black swans.
  • Mentone Life Saving Club: a great stop to enjoy and take in the views. Optional: You can choose to instead stop at Beaumaris Bay Fossil site to look for real fossils, especially fun for kids!
  • Mordialloc: this vibrant beachside suburb has a lot on offer. Walk the 300-meter-long pier, enjoy the beach & harbour.
  • Time for a break. Sit down for a coffee or tea at the Mordi Canteen. A local cafe that serves a variety of locally roasted brews, lattes and aromatic tea blends. Have a delicious muffin or slice of banana bread or choose something from the all-day breakfast menu with 7% discount for Bay Bikes customers.
  • After the pitstop, continue your ride to the Edithvale Wetlands.  Edithvale Wetlands is an internationally significant habitat for a diversity of birdlife. The bird hide is open nearly every weekend between 1 – 5pm.
  • Optional: if kids are attending the tour, continue for 2 kilometers along the wetlands to Chelsea - Bicentennial Park where the kids can have a blast in a huge adventure playground.
  • Time to go back to Sandringham. Stop at Halfmoon Bay, famous among locals because of the relaxed and vibrant vibe it boosts. We strongly recommend to order Fish & Chips from The Cerberus Beach kiosk. You can choose to have your Fish & Chips at the outdoor seating area, the pier or on the beach.

When

Daily at 10am from the Bay Bikes shop in Sandringham. Pre-book at least 1 week ahead.

FAQs

What level of fitness is required for this tour? This tour, like our standard e-bike rental, is suitable for everyone in good physical health to participate in bicycling. Our E-bikes require less effort than a standard bike and therefore this tour is suitable for people with a low to average physical fitness level.

Is E-bike experience required? No, if you are capable of riding a standard bike, you will be able to ride an E-bike. In fact, you might find it easier as it requires less effort. Limited biking experience is needed.

What do I need to bring?

  • Wear weather appropriate and suitable clothing for bike riding.
  • A water bottle (our bikes are fitted out with a drink bottle holder).
  • Sunscreen & sunglasses in case of warm weather, rain jacket or poncho in case of rainy weather.
  • Camera or phone for photos. Your dedicated guide will be happy taking group photos for you as well.
  • If you choose to make a stop at Beaumaris Bay Fossil Site, we recommend bringing a little container or ziplock bag for fossils.
