Edithvale wetlands route

Map of the route from Bay Bikes to Edithvale wetlands with places to visit along the way.

Overview

The 17 km route to Edithvale Wetlands takes you past some hidden gems that only locals know about. A peaceful route with beautiful views and stops along the way.

  • 4 Hour or Full Day rental.
  • 35 Kilometers return - approx. 4 Hours (~2 hours bike riding).
  • Riders must be at least 12 years old & ~150 cm tall (and be accompanied by an adult). Kids under 12 can ride as a passenger with an adult as our e-bikes are 2-person bikes (max. weight 150kg). For this tour we recommend 1 adult per bike.
  • Child seats available for children 9 months - 4 years (<22 kg) at an additional fee of $20.

Highlights

  • First stop is Red Bluff lookout. One of Melbourne’s least-known natural wonders, Red Bluff’s sandstone formations are a must-see.
  • Next stop is Half Moon Bay, it has a relaxing vibe, although when the weather is warmer it's vibrant at the same time. Gaze out over the ocean with boats gently bobbing on the water and take in the views of the cliff. If you are ready for lunch we recommend getting Fish & Chips from the Cerberus Beach House, a local’s favourite. At less than 200 meters from shore, sits the Cerberus Shipwreck, visible from the pier and shore.
  • After a peaceful 15-minute bike ride, with beautiful views of the Bay, you will reach Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary. If you first want to grab a coffee or lunch, stop at Ricketts Point Teahouse, just before the carpark of the sanctuary. The cafe has a great assortment of food and cakes and offers beautiful views over the water. At the marine sanctuary you can explore the rock pools, look for seabirds (often black swans are spotted here) or go for a snorkel (byo snorkel gear).
  • Continue your journey on the Bay Trail.  Your next stop is a bit of a hidden gem. The cliffs and underlying gravel beds of Beaumaris Bay Fossil Site contain one of the richest and most diverse fossil assemblages in Australia for both marine mammals and sharks. You can also find sea glass and shells here. Bring a bag for your finds!
  • You can choose to make a stop at the recently rebuilt Mentone Life Saving Club. There's a beautiful rooftop where you can just make a quick stop to take in the views.
  • Looking for a beach stop? Parkdale Beach is a nice beach with calm waters. Perfect for a swim or to walk along the shore. Look for Seagull Rock! If you'd like to make a pitstop to refuel, we can recommend Parkdale Beach Kiosk. Located on the cliffs just past Parkdale Beach. They have a great menu, good coffee, and the views are the best!
  • Next stop is the vibrant beachside suburb Mordialloc. The main street is iconic with its avenue of palm trees. Watch the boats coming in or harboured in Mordialloc Creek, check out the beach and the long Mordialloc pier which provides a pleasant walk with panoramic views. There’s a nice playground in the reserve right behind the beach.
  • We have partnered up with The Mordi Canteen in Mordialloc. At this cafe they are all about bringing people together through good food and great vibes. Their menu is as diverse as the crowd they welcome. Enjoy a special Bay Bikes customer discount on their food, ask for the voucher at Bay Bikes.
  • If you have GPS available, navigate to the Edithvale Wetlands bird hide (the bird hide has limited opening hours), but the ride is really nice and peaceful. If you don't have navigation, ride along the marina and go under the bridge, turn right, ride along the water until you see a small bridge on your right-hand side, cross the bridge and continue riding on the Bay trail bike path along the creek until you see the wetlands.
  • Optional - fun with kids: Bicentennial Park. Follow the sign 'Mt Chelsea Playground' and ride ~2 km further (along the wetlands) to find a huge adventure playground.
  • Ride back to Bay Bikes in Sandringham. Approximate 1 hour, 17 kilometers.

FAQs

What level of fitness is required for this tour? This tour, like our standard e-bike rental, is suitable for everyone in good physical health to participate in bicycling. Our E-bikes require less effort than a standard bike and therefore this tour is suitable for people with a low to average physical fitness level.

Is E-bike experience required? No, if you are capable of riding a standard bike, you will be able to ride an E-bike. In fact, you might find it easier as it requires less effort. Intermediate biking experience is recommended, as some of the areas where you will be riding can get a busier over summer.

What do I need to bring?

  • Wear weather appropriate and suitable clothing for bike riding.
  • A water bottle (our bikes are fitted out with a drink bottle holder).
  • Sunscreen & sunglasses in case of warm weather, rain jacket or poncho in case of rainy weather.
  • Camera or phone for photos.
