Williamstown scenic route

Full day bike route to Williamstown with a lot of interesting places to visit along the way.

Overview

A great route for tourists and locals to (re)discover the Bay and see things you haven't seen before. It covers a lot of famous Melbourne sightseeing spots, like the Brighton Bathing Boxes, St Kilda and Princes Pier in Port Melbourne. You are assured of beautiful views of Port Phillip Bay and the city skyline. Go under the West Gate Bridge in West Gate Park to take the ferry across the Yarra River and cycle to historic Williamstown!

  • Full Day Rental.
  • 50 Kilometers return - approx. 7,5 Hours (~3 hours bike riding).
  • Riders must be at least 12 years old & ~150 cm tall (and be accompanied by an adult). Kids under 12 can ride as a passenger with an adult as our e-bikes are 2-person bikes (max. weight 150kg). For this tour we don't allow 2 adults per bike as this will reduce the durability of the battery.
  • Child seats available for children 9 months - 4 years (<22 kg) at an additional fee of $20.

Highlights

  • First stop is the Brighton Bathing Boxes. One of the most photographed spots of Victoria and top Melbourne sightseeing destination.
  • Ride as close as you can get to the beach on the bike path along Elwood Beach. Ride slowly to take in the views and the vibrant atmosphere on warm days. Great beach to go for a swim - byo towel.
  • At Point Ormond you can park the bikes and walk to the top of the hill. There you will be rewarded with impressive panoramic views over Port Phillip Bay and Melbourne's skyline to the North. Another great photo spot in Melbourne.
  • Continue your journey on the Bay Trail which offers beautiful views. You will ride past the St. Kilda Marina, another Melbourne Icon: St. Kilda pier and the Catani Gardens. If you have time, park your bikes and walk the world-famous pier. After the pier, stroll through the Catani Gardens over walking paths lined with Canary Island palms trees.
  • Or choose to cycle through the popular Acland Street with its world famous cakeshops and make a quick stop at the historic amusement park: Luna Park for a photo opportunity of the iconic Mr. Moon mouth. You can also see the historic picture palace: the Palais Theatre. This is a little detour.
  • Cycle for 15 minutes past Port Melbourne Beach (another great beach to go for a swim - byo towel) while taking in the views of the ocean, the beautiful architecture of the houses along Beach Road and the occasional classic or sportscar cruising past. After about 4 kilometers you will reach Princes Pier. Another famous photo spot in Melbourne.
  • Continue to West Gate Park, it has great bike riding paths. So close to the city, yet so much greenery. Head towards the Salt Lake first, if you are lucky, it is bright pink! The park offers beautiful views of the West Gate bridge.
  • If you have GPS available, navigate to the Westgate Punt Ferry Service. Or turn left on the Bay Trail path towards the bridge. At one point you will go under the bridge, soon after you will reach the small jetty of the ferry service. Check their timetable here. EFTPOS only.
  • The Bay Trail continues right along the water to historic Williamstown! Relax in a cafe along the foreshore and soak up the proud maritime history – established in 1837 as Melbourne's first port, before you head back to our shop in Sandringham. If you have enough time, you can cycle back through a part of the city, South Melbourne and along Albert Park. From St Kilda you take the Bay Trail along the coast back to Bay Bikes.

When

FAQs

What level of fitness is required for this tour? This tour, like our standard e-bike rental, is suitable for everyone in good physical health to participate in bicycling. Our E-bikes require less effort than a standard bike and therefore this tour is suitable for people with a low to average physical fitness level.

Is E-bike experience required? No, if you are capable of riding a standard bike, you will be able to ride an E-bike. In fact, you might find it easier as it requires less effort. Intermediate biking experience is recommended, as some of the areas where you will be riding can get a busier over summer.

What do I need to bring?

  • Wear weather appropriate and suitable clothing for bike riding.
  • A water bottle (our bikes are fitted out with a drink bottle holder).
  • Sunscreen & sunglasses in case of warm weather, rain jacket or poncho in case of rainy weather.
  • Camera or phone for photos.
