We exclusively use the DiroDi Rover fat tyre bike for our rentals, because we like the looks and the specs.
It's very similar to riding a standard bicycle except you can add as much assistance from the motor (250W) as you want. You do this simply by changing the levels from 1 to 6 with a +/- button on the handlebar of the bike. You still have to pedal to get moving. Our bikes have a throttle as well, it's a helping aid to start riding and works up to 6 km/h. For more info about the bikes check out this page.
Definitely, in fact many beginners find e-bikes easier and safer to ride as they require less effort to pedal up hill. If you are unsure, let our friendly staff know and we will make sure to take some time to get you comfortable with the bike in a quiet and safe environment before you go on your ride.
No, you don't need a licence to ride our E-bikes. They are Electrically Power Assisted Cycles (EPAC) and require the rider to pedal to access the power. They have an electric motor that has a maximum continued rated power of 250 watts. In other words: our bikes follow the Australian road legality standards and are classed as bicycles, therefor the rider doesn't have to be licensed.
It is not so much about age, but more about height and ability. Minimum riders' height is 150 CM. On average 13-year-olds will be tall and capable enough to ride our bikes, if they are confident bike riders. Riders under 18 get 50% discount of the e-bike hire rates when accompanied by at least 1 full paying adult. We want Bay Bikes to be a fun, affordable family activity.
We strongly advise for an adult to accompany under 18-year-olds. We can refuse anyone under 18 to ride to our sole discretion.
The Rover is powered by a 250 watt motor and has a torque of 55 N.m for great hill climbing power, and is able to reach the speed of 25 km/h (legal assisted max speed).
We have 12 E-bikes available. They are all Dirodi Rover E-bikes and suitable for up to 2 people (<150kg). We have 2 child seats available for children under 5 years of age (<22kg), older children and adults can sit on the back of the saddle behind the rider.

Best is to pre-book your bikes online. That way you are sure of availability on your preferred day and time, and you will save time on the day. The bikes will be ready for you and you can sign the waiver beforehand online. You can watch our 'How to make an online booking' video here.
You can also pre-book your E-bikes by calling us or sending an email with your details.
For same day bookings, always give us a call before heading to our shop to check availability!
When you pick up your bike, it will come with everything you need to start riding: a battery, helmet(s), lock, phone holder, drink bottle holder and a storage basket. And of course, we can provide you with tips & insights on where to go and we will give you instructions on how to operate the E-bike.
There are more exciting things you can choose to add on, have a look at our accessories to see what we have on offer.
We recommend you book in advance, as a lot of people can have the same idea on the same day, and we may not have a bike available if you havenβt booked one.
We have a super-flexible Rescheduling and Cancellation Policy. Ride bookings can be cancelled and rescheduled online, by phone, walk in or by emailing us at info@baybikes.com.au.
You must provide us with more than 48 hours' notice to reschedule your Ride for no additional fee. Where you have provided less than 48 hours and more than 24 hours' notice, you may reschedule your Ride for the Rescheduling Fee. The Rescheduling Fee is set at 10% of the total Rental Fee.
Just like when you rent a car, or stay at a hotel, we will take a $100 pre-authorisation on your card approx. 24 hours prior to your rental start time and your credit card details are held as security. We do this to cover any potential damages or unforeseen circumstances during the rental period. The security deposit is refunded in full when the bike is returned undamaged at the end of your rental.
Pre-authorisations can take some time to 'drop off' depending on your bank, but they will not affect your credit card balance on a credit card. A pre-auth will affect your available balance on a debit card. You can contact your bank to find out their specific standard pre-auth return timeframes.
Booking online is easy, secure and quick. Watch this 'How To' video about the online booking process. Alternatively, you can call us or send us an email with your booking details, and we will make the booking for you.

Most famous are:
Although from our shop in Sandringham we have access to a safe shared bike path along Beach Road, we always recommend going South, away from the city when you are a beginner or when riding with children. It tends to be a bit quieter in that direction. And it is just as beautiful, offers amazing views over the ocean, has great cafes and interesting stops along the way.
A great route to do when you are going for a full day, is the route to Williamstown. It covers a lot of famous Melbourne sightseeing spots, you are assured of beautiful views of Port Phillip Bay and the city skyline, and you cross the Yarra River with a small passenger ferry after which it's a short bike ride to historic Williamstown!
Pick up your E-bikes an hour before sunset (time depending on the season) and ride to Point Ormond Lookout during golden hour. Make sure to get there half an hour before sunset and enjoy the panoramic views of Port Phillip Bay, the city skyline and most important one of Melbourne's most beautiful sunsets. More info about the sunset tour here.
